Sewing Tips & Bits

Make sure you are sewing with a scant 1/4" seam allowance.  As a test, sew three 1 1/2" wide strips together.  The measurement across the strips should be 3 1/2".  Or, you can use Lynn Grave's Little Foot.

Before you begin sewing your project, fill all available bobbins with a 100% cotton neutral thread.

Use only top quality 100% cotton fabrics.

Mix your own spray starch.  Use a small spray bottle such as the ones from the beauty supply store.  Get your liquid starch from the grocery store, and use the instructions for mixing the medium starch strength.

Keep a pressing board and small craft iron (we like the Clover brand) near your sewing machine.  It will save you time and steps.

If you find a novelty fabric you like, get it - even if you do not know what you will do with it.  Even better is the novelty fabric that has great coordinates.
Triangles on a Roll come in many sizes and work great for half-square and quarter square triangles.
Make sure your borders fit.  Measure across the center of your quilt both horizontally and vertically, and cut your border to fit.
After cutting your fabric for your quilt, cut your remaining fabrics into strips.  Cut the size strip you use for bindings.  These leftover strips can then be used on your next scrap quilt project.
